There he acquired Arabic, primarily to access Ptolemy's Almagest,[3] which maintained exceptional prestige among academics but remained unavailable in Latin before his relocation to Castile. The initial Latin version had been produced from Greek sources around 1160 in Sicily.[4] While precise dates of his Castilian relocation are unclear, it occurred no later than 1144.
