The cost of polyethylene (PE), the most widely manufactured plastic, has surged around 30% since the war began. This is mainly because approximately 84% of Middle Eastern polyethylene production capacity depends on the Strait of Hormuz for maritime exports, according to a report from Harrison Jacoby, PE director at ICIS. While the U.S. is a significant exporter of PE, the increasing price could translate to higher expenses for Americans. This material is present in a multitude of items, from grocery sacks and milk containers to cleaning product bottles and children's playthings. Dow CEO Jim Fitterling recently cautioned that shortages in industrial chemicals might drive inflation for the remainder of the year.
